November in the Court of S'ns The old grandfather clock struck midnight, twelve solemn bells that signified Ending and Beginning in the way that no other number, and no other clock, ever could. Jack sighed, downed the last of his whiskey, and stood up. The candles that spluttered near to the end of their wicks on the mahogany throne behind him finally gave up and smoked away into nothingness. "Lords and Ladies of the Court, ladies and gentlemen both living and departed, I must now bid you farewell. My time is over for another year, and I must now hand over to my sister as your host for theNovember in the Court of S'ns

Shiiai's Dream It came to me that night like a flashback, but it was of memories I didn't have, memories I'm not even sure she had. The way she'd left the village one morning, another little girl the same age as me, taking a trip to the nearby town with her parents. I knew that in my waking memory I could not even remember what she looked like then, but as I sank deeper into the dream the scene became coloured in and more detailled, putting her in a light-blue dress and plaited hair, smiling happily as their cart rattled away into the valley. The dream skipped ahead. "What'sShiiai's Dream

The Clock Struck Twelve So, tonight was the night. Now or never, and all that. That's the thought I kept trying to push to the front of my mind, to keep back the disappointment that I'd started feeling even now, before I even knew. She'd been a drinker, our mum, though she swore blind to us she'd never touched more than half a glass. When we were kids, we never knew what it was that made her weird, but Dad did. They fought a lot after we went to bed. But when dad was away, sometimes, she'd come back from the pub all calm and thoughtful. What thoughts she had were no good, of course, the not-quite-sane bubbling ofThe Clock Struck Twelve

Flapjack It was the fourth time that I'd met that little girl in the alley behind the Coach and Horses. Just as she had each of the previous three times, she stood there in the shadows, staring at me unblinking, daring me to make something of the fact that she was there. I staggered toward her, five pints and six double vodkas the worse for wear. She didn't shy away. "It ain't safe for you out here," I said, just as I always said. "You're lucky you met me, I'm not so bad, but there's a lotta' nasty people you could run inta' in dark alleys behind pubs." &nbFlapjack
